General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said that there was no condition for him to attend any extraordinary congresses held by the two rival National Awakening Party camps. He said that he had no structural relation with the party.

"There is no condition for me to attend the extraordinary congresses," Hasyim told reporters following his meeting with the leader of the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura Party), Gen (ret) Wiranto at the Jakarta's PBNU headquarters on Monday (28/4).<>

He said he would not interfere with the internal conflicts in the NU-born party and expected the party's internal rift to be soon settled.

The internal dispute within the PKB, the fifth-largest faction at the House, revolved around the dismissal of party leader Muhaimin Iskandar earlier this month at the request of Gus Dur, who is also Muhaimin's uncle.

The PKB, the fifth-largest faction in the House of Representatives, has been facing its toughest test of unity since the party's executive board formally dismissed party leader Muhaimin earlier this month.

Muhaimin defied the decision, calling attention to an order by Muslim ulema connected to the party that he stay. The Jakarta Post reported.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has urged parties with double leadership -- including the PKB -- to resolve their conflicts before May 12. Should they fail to do so, the KPU will exclude them from the verification process. Parties must go through the process to be eligible to run in next year's elections. (rif)
