Hasyim: RI should be responsible if Iran-US war breaks out

Hasyim Muzadi, chairman of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), said since the Indonesian government has supported the UN Security Council resolution imposing additional sactions on Iran, it must also bear reponsibility if war breaks out betwwen Iran and the United States.
"If eventually war breaks out between Iran and the US , the Indonesian government must also be responsible," Muzadi said after attending the declaration of "Baitul Muslimin Indonesia" , the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDI-P)’s Islamic organization, at the party’s headquarters here on Thursday.<>
He said there was nothing that could be done to change Indonesia’s stand on UNSC Resolution 1474 which imposed tightened sanctions on Iran for refusing to stop its nuclear power development program.
"It (the UNSC resolution) is an initial ’legitimate’ means for (the United States) to attack Iran," Muzadi, holder of an honorary doctorate on Islamic civilization, said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The governemnt’s decision to support the sanctions on Iran indicated that Indonesia had sided with the efforts of the United States and Israel to attack Iran, he said.
Therefore, if eventually there is blood-shed in Iran , Indonesia will be one of the countries which must bear responsibility, according to Muzadi.
He said although the Indonesian government supported the UNSC resolution, the NU would remain consistent in supporting Iran and Middle Eastern countries that had became victims of injustice.
Fifteen members of the UN Security Council, including Indonesia as non-permament member, endorsed on Saturday (March 24) a resolution to impose additional sanctions on Iran after the country refused to stop its uranium enrichment program.
UN Security Council Resolution 1747 which was prepared by Britain, France and Germany calls for a ban on export of weapons to Iran and freezing of the assets of 28 persons and organizations linked to the Iranian nuclear and missile program.
Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said here on Monday Indonesia hoped Iran could make use of the time provided by the resolution to seek a peaceful solution to the issue.
The resolution gives Iran 60 days before it has to fully comply with the resolution. (dar)
