General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi criticized the attitude of a number of NU politicians in the National Awakening Party (PKB). He said the politicians were in need of NU involvement when they were in conflict.

"They come to the PBNU because of conflict. If there's nothing they forget. They have no such care about NU," Hasyim said on the sidelines of a national meeting held by the Communication Forum and Silaturrahim of alumni of the Indonesian Muslim Students Movement (PMII) at the Jakarta's Santika Hotel on Thursday (22/5).<>

Most of the PKB politicians, Hasyim said, had thought about their own interest. As long as their interest were "on the right track", they tended to pay no attention to NU. "If they are struggling for someone, it means their interest lies in his/her circle."

The ex-activist of the PMII hoped the national meeting could also be part of formulating more concrete strategies of movement and synchronizing NU politicians' movement in any political parties instead of being a gathering place.

"The alumni of PMII have been anywhere, in the House of Representatives, in the government and in beaurocracy. This potential should expectedly be used to make people prosperous in which we (Nahdliyin) are the majority," Hasyim said.

The meeting was attended by ex-activists of the PMII who are now chairing political parties like Muhaimin Iskandar, Ali Masykur Musa, and Suryadharma Ali.

The meeting would reportedly be open by Vice President Jusuf Kalla in the Vice Presidential Palace on coming 23 May 2008. The meeting would be held for three days till Sunday 25 May 2008 at the Jakarta's Santika Hotel. (rif)
