ICIS General Secretary: Don`t let Islam be hijacked

General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi who is also secretary general of the third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) said Muslims should not let Islam be hijacked by a few provocateurs.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference here Wednesday (30/7), Hasyim also said the fellow Muslims came to the scholarly forum because of the same ideas dealing with the Islamic values suc<>h as peace, solidarity, and justice.

"It is indeed a sad condition that most of the conflicts in the world take place in Muslim countries, like Iran, Afghanistan, Sudan, and also South Thailand," Hasyim said.

"We should look into ourselves to identify the internal problems that caused the conflicts," Hasyim added.

He further explained five objectives of the conference --taking objective and comprehensive portrait of the crisis, drawing common perception of the anatomy of conflicts, preventing the conflict based on the common awareness, examining and completing strength and weakness, and keeping solid against Islamophobia and Muslimphobia.

The International Conference of Islamic Scholars was started at around 10.00 a.m. The singing of Indonesian National Anthem "Indonesia Raya" by the choir from Syarif Hidayatullah State`s Islamic University marked the opening ceremony.

Some 350 participant from 64 countries--including 27 international figures and 13 Indonesian figures took part in that three-day conference held by Nahdlatul Ulama (the awakening of ulema)--the biggest Islamic organization in Indonesia

The conference is being held in Jakarta from July 29 to August 1, 2008, with the theme "Upholding Islam as Rahmatan Lil `Alamin (Blessing for the universe): Peace Building and Conflict Prevention in the Muslim World." (dar)
