The late KH Idham Chalid would be buried in a military funeral in appreciation for his services to the state and nation, Antara news agency reported.
A prayer service was held at Darrul Taqwa mosque near his residence at Cipete, South Jakarta, and at 10 am local time, Monday, his body was taken to a cemetery in the compound of Darul Quran Islamic boarding school Cisarua, Bogor, West Java, for burial.r />
He was a national figure who had held the posts of second deputy prime minister during the Soekarno administration, and chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly in the Soeharto era.
Dr. Idham Chalid passed away at the age of 88 at his home in the Darrul Maarif educational complex in Cipete, South Jakarta, Sunday at 8 am local after fighting stroke for 10 years.
Idham Chalid was born in Setui, South Kalimantan, on August 27, 1922.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono early Monday paid his last respects to the late Idham Chalid.
In His brief remarks, the head of state said Dr. Idham Chalid was a great national figure with equally great ideas.
Indonesia had lost one of its best sons with the demise of Idham Chalid at the age of 88 years old on Sunday, July 11, 2010, the head of state said.
"We know him as a great figure with equally great ideas who has made great contributions to the state and nation," Yudhoyono said.
Under the Soekarno administration, Idham Chalid was twice deputy prime minister. He continued to serve the country during the Soeharto era by holding several ministerial posts, chairman of the MPR (People`s Consultative Assembly)/DPR (House of Representatives), and the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA).
He had also led the country`s largest Muslim organization Nadhlatul Ulama (NU) for 28 years. (dar)
