Iran is skeptical of US agenda in Iraq conference

Head of Majlis Commission for National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Thursday that Iran is skeptical of the US agenda in the upcoming Iraq international conference.

He said that presence of US forces in Iraq is currently is the major question.

He told reporters and in response to a question on possibility of direct talks between the Iranian and the American delegations on the sidelines of Iraq international conference that Iran is skeptical of the US performance in Iraq and sees no goodwill.

"Former Iranian delegation who had gone to Iraq at the invitation of Iraqi president were arrested by US troops," he said.

"We doubt whether or not the US seeks restoration of tranquility in Iraq," he said.

On Iran's nuclear standoff and the result of his negotiations with German officials during his visit to Germany, he said since they have made efforts to issue a tough resolution on Iran's peaceful nuclear activities, the pivot of discussion with German foreign minister was to ease the tough tone of the resolution, he said.

He said the issue would only be resolved through negotiations, adding that the Iranian foreign ministry is to issue a statement in the near future to highlight this fact.

Germany believes that diplomatic efforts should be continued and UNSC resolution would not solve any problem, he pointed out.

Given pivotal role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Baghdad international conference, Germany believes that there would be a good chance for Iran and the US to reach mutual understanding.

The Islamic Republic of Iran under no circumstances gives up its legitimate rights endorsed in NPT, he said.

He added that US pressures in the form of UNSC resolutions would leave no impact on Iran's firm determination on benefiting from peaceful nuclear technology under NPT. (irn/dar)
