NU is considerably the only ulema organization implementing direct democratic process in electing its new leaders. Organizations mostly comprising ulema have most of the time elected their new leaders through ruling authorities or a team specially designed to choose the leaders.

Not surprisingly, a number of ambassadors from Middle East countries have greatly appreciated the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization for still making its ulema keep their focus on deliberating various issues or problems based on religious considerations, including issuing edits in dealing with the problems.

"All Arab ambassadors have 'raised their thumb' for (NU) ulema who are considered democratic. It is different from the Middle East in which ulema have focused on halal (permissible) and haram (forbidden) matters. It is again very interesting for them. They have been many democratic countries in the Middle East such as Algeria, Sudan, Jordan and so on, but in regard with ulema, there is no democracy," general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj said.

Siradj said that mechanism of electing Syaikhul Azhar or mufti (Islamic jurists) in some Middle East countries had mostly been appointed by president despite considerations from various parties.

Following his mandate as new general chairman of the probably world's largest Islamic organization in its congress in Makassar recently, Siradj has often received visits from Middle East countries' ambassadors to know more what having so far been conducted by the Nahdliyin-based organization.

Siradj also said that in coming few weeks president Fatah would visit the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta, saying that the process of democratization was due to the significant role played by former general chairman of the organization KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur).

"Nahdliyin (NU followers) have gotten valuable lessons from Gus Dur (for his important role) in educating especially NU followers to be democratic and brilliant in politics. So this is what we all should maintain," he said. (mkf)
