Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Ministry is currently conducting an inventory of all Islamic schools and boarding schools throughout the country as parts of its plan to improve the quality of the private schools.
Religious Affairs Minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni said here on Thursday that the government paid serious attention to the improvement of private schools’ quality. For the 2007 working plan, the religious affairs ministry gave priority to the education sector, he said. Many private schools, which had been ignored for years, needed to be redeveloped and supported, the minister said.
<>After completing the inventory, the ministry would start providing assistance, he said. "Of course, the priority would be given to private schools which are still active in implementing their functions," he said.
In the 2006 state budget, the religious affairs ministry received Rp6.5 trillion. For the year 2007, the government has allocated a budget amounting to Rp16.5 trillion. "More than 75 of the fund will be used to support private education," he said.
Minister Maftu Basyuni gave the information in his remarks when inaugurating the ministry’s education and training center campus at Ciputat, Tangerang, Banten Province. The new campus is located near the state Islamic University (UIN) of Syarif Hidayatullah. (ant/mad)
