The Muhammadiyah Islamic organization intends to safeguard the political transition and national leadership succession in 2014 so the processes can take place in better ways than before while itself not necessarily engaging in practical politics, its leader said.

Speaking to the press after the close of Muhammadiyah`s 46th congress here Thursday, the organization`s newly reelected chairman, Din Syamsuddin, said the political temperature in the country in the run up to 2014 would no doubt rise because a political transition and national leadership succession would happen in that year.

He said the political arena would see the emergence of younger figures while the older figures would try to maintain their positions, and this might create tensions harmful to the political transition process.

Therefore, he said, Muhammadiyah would do its best to safeguard the political transition and, if necessary, engineer conditions to keep it on the right track without itself getting involved in practical politics.

In 2014 there will be a national leadership succession as President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will end his second, and final, term in office.

"We want to create a conducive political situation that is advantageous to the people at large, not a political direction that sides with a certain group or leaves out others," Din Syamsuddin said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Asked whether Muhammadiyah might nominate some figure for the national leadership then, Din Syamsuddin said his organization never nominated anybody for political office, including for the national leadership.

He had said earlier that Muhammadiyah`s involvement in the political realm was not the organization`s main agenda or objective.

The main agenda of Muhammadiyah, according to Din, was to develop its services in the interest of the people at large, namely development in education, health, and welfare improvement through business and cooperative activities.

He said Muhammadiyah would maintain a stance of equi-distance toward all political parties while allowing a number of its members to join political parties to develop Islamic ethics in politics.

Therefore, he said, there were Muhammadiyah activists in almost all political parties. (dar)
