The Nahdliyin (NU followers) in East Java are expected not to abstain from voting in the second round of the province gubernatorial election on coming September this year.
Chairman of Advisory Council (Shuriyah) of the East Java's NU Regional Board KH Miftachul Akhyar made the remarks at a commemoration of the 85th birth of NU (in accordance with Islamic calendar) in Bangkalan, Madura on Tuesday (5/8).<>
According to Kiai Miftach abstaining from voting may be considered to have abolish opportunity to chose and determine prospective leaders. Whereas the leadership was one of main factors for the future of the province, he said.
Kiai Miftach also called on Nahdliyin to further strengthen their unity in developing organization. Through this way, he said, NU would be better in the future.
"NU, as an organization, should be able to show its solidity. In other word, we must be under one command for the NU has been born with its expected system," Kiai Miftach said. NU Online's Supandi reported.
In the commemoration attended be some ten thousands of Nahdliyin across Bangkalan, Kiai Miftach reminded the Nahdliyin of the importance of organization's unity. In this regard, he did expect NU Syuriyah members to play their authority for "within the NU stucture, the function of Shuriyah has really been clear in nature."
The tight East Java gubernatorial race looks set to go to the second round after none of the five pairs of candidates managed to secure more than 30 percent of the vote, the threshold required by the 2008 regional administration law.
The quick count results indicate the pair of Soekarwo and Saifullah Yusuf (Karsa) will face their strongest opponents Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Mudjiono (Ka-ji) in the second round of the election.
Based on the recapitulation of the manual counting result of the East Java General Elections Commission (KPUD), Karsa is in the first place with 4.498.332 eligible voters or 26,43 percent and followed by Ka-ji with 4.223.089 voters or 24,82 percent. (rif)
