The Nahdliyin (NU followers) are told to do crescent observation (rukyatul hilal) to determine the beginning of Ramadhan on Sunday evening, 31 August 2008 or 29 Sya'ban 1429 (in Islamic calendar).
The observation will be coordinated by each NU board in various level and be executed by the Lajnah Lalakiyah (committee of astronomical work) of Nahdlatul Ulama (LFNU).<>
The report of the result of rukyat will be delivered to the LFNU and be then brought to a meeting in determining the beginning of Ramadhan at the office of the Religious Affairs Department.
Chairman of the LFNU KH Ghozalie Masroeri said here Tuesday (26/8) that the rukyatul hilal must be conducted to determine the beginning of Ramadhan as ordered by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). While dealing with hisab (astronomical calculation) was a means of the rukyat.
Based on the data of hisab of the LFNU, hilal (crescent) may predictably be seen clearly for its high position (imkanur rukyat) except the crescent is completely covered by clouds.
Data in accordance with the PBNU Islamic calendar published by the LFNU suggested that the ijtima' (conjunction) in the beginning of Ramadhan in Jakarta will fall on Sunday, 31 August 2008 at 02.57 WIB (Western Indonesian Time Zone).
If the crescent could not be seen, Ghozalie said, NU, the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, and other organizations basing themselves on the rukyatul hilal, will start fasting on 1 September 2008. (nam)
