NU can be strengthened by making greater use of zakat

Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Masdar F. Mas'udi said that such religious social organizations as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) could not be subordinate organization under the control of the government.
Instead of being opposed to the governmnet, Masdar said, the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization should be independent from any other parties including the government and share roles within their own fields.<>
That's why respecting the plan to revise Law No 381999, on zakat management, Masdar hoped the government not to takeover any rights related to the zakat management. In this regard, the zakat should be managed by religious social organizations themselves.
"The government has been enough to manage taxes plus pilgrimage funds and so on," Masdar said at a meeting taking up issues on zakat at the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday , adding that the management of zakat should again and again be retrurned by the ummat, and at this point it should be managed by such religious mass organizations as NU.
He asserted that strengthening mass organizations was not meant to be opposed to the government because such organizations are part of the most important elements from the government, saying that the organizations were purposefully established to help the government realize its duties.
"If the mass organizations are weak, what will experinece loss is not only the government but also the state as a whole because mass organizations are the most important parts of the state," masdar said.
In regard with efforts to strengthen NU, Masdar said that the Nahdliyin-based organization should pay more attention to the management of zakat.
"I think, from now NU can be strengthened by optimally managing zakat," Masdar who is also one of the PBNU general chairman candidates said.
Masdar disagreed any opinion that NU has not yet been capable of managing zakat professionally, arguing that the government and zakat institutions had so far had weaknesses in dealing with the zakat management. (nam)
