General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH hasyim Muzadi said the big number of Nahdliyin could be considered as strength and weakness as well, potential and burden that should be tackled.

"People outside the NU have most of the time misunderstood. They thought that NU with its big followers would easily address all its problems," Hasyim said, adding that what should first of all be addressed was the big number of NU followers "whose strength and weakness, potential and burden."<>

While speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the PBNU and Bank Indonesia at the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday (15/7), Hasyim said that most of NU board members were the ones whose no such good capability. For that reason, he added, they must first of all be directed before being involved in any professional program.

"A program would not be directly given to NU board members. They should first of all be bridged by organizing (for instance) an ongoing training from the central to regions," he said. (mkf)
