NU clerics: keep on guard against transnational ideologies

The clerics (kiai) of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) throughout Cirebon held meeting at Khatulistiwa Islamic boarding school, Gempol, Cirebon, West Java over the weekend.

At the meeting, the NU clerics called on Nahdliyin (NU followers) to keep on guard against any Islamic movements related to their transnational political agenda.<>

In the meantime, they also called on the Nahdliyin to stand firm against new religious movements both threatening the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and imposing the establishment of Islamic state.

KH Syarif Utsman Yahya who was also present at the occasion said those promoting the establishment of Islamic state tended to be opposed to the traditions of NU.

Scores of clerics attending the meeting were, KH Syarif Hud Yahya (Ciwaringin, Cirebon), KH Rahmatullah and KH Mughni (Tegal), KH Mansur (Gegesik), KH Haris Jauhari (Susukan), KH Ibrahim Rozi (Weru), KH Zahid Hidayat (Plered), KH Doim (Kapetakan), KH Hamidin (Gunung Djati), KH Mahfudz Bakri (Kasepuhan) KH Faizin Adnan and KH Zuhdi (Losari), KH Hasanuddin Kriyani (Buntet) and KH Ridwan Sufyan (Pabedilan).

While, General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi has repeatedly called on all of the nation's elements to increasingly take a stand against any religion-based transnational movements. These movements could really disturb the world nations' relationship, he said.

"The transnational movements would not only have negative impacts on the the transnational movements themselves but also on economy, culture, social and so on including international politics, namely the disturbance of nations' relationship," (rif)
