In this year's election, there are many questioning the political power of the country's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) because there have been no its figures really taking part in the national leadership succession. This situation should be such a momentous event for NU to be able to take brilliant measures.

Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Masdar F. Mas'udi made the remarks here Tuesday (3/3), adding any change would always bring two wings, namely momentum to be better or plunged into bankruptcy.<>

"We should keep up with this situation as a chance to do fundamental changes in building better NU as the source of national spirituality, source of morality," Masdar said, regretting NU figures for letting the momentum slip away and being capable of plunging NU into ruin.

Masdar said, both the modernization and transformation had made the privilege of individuals like ulema (clerics) become less worthy in addition to desacralizing their privilege for being used to mobilize politics possibly littered with various political interests which are very different from one another. This scene would be able to degrade NU's privilege.

"People (ummah) have expected NU not to mobilize politics. Instead, NU should serve the ummah. That is why it should be closer to the ummah. This is the main agenda of NU," Masdar told NU Online.

He also stressed the importance of remaining keeping NU's national and people-oriented political agenda in addition to clearly and firmly taking a stand against any challenge and threat posed by various new groups whose such different goals which are very different from NU.

For that reason, he argued, any effort to reorganize the power of NU as a solid power was inevitable. A well organized power being capable of showing its excellent characters, being solid socially and having clear vision would in turn be respected and taken into account by others.

Masdar expressed his conviction if NU became a solid organization, NU-based parties would receive its additional benefits because they could be regarded as such enclosures of a big system within NU. (mkf)
