Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siroj (Kang Said) said that the NU founding fathers had never thought to establish Islamic state in the country.

The NU commitment in dealing with the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) could be traced from its Banjarmasin congress in 1935, said Kang Said as addressing a religious gathering to commemorate the Nuzulul Qur'an (the descent of the Holy Qur'an), held by the NU Special Branch Board of Australia-New Zeland in Canberra over the weekend.<>

Kang Said that the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization had been committed that before and after independence, Indonesia must be built as a peaceful country with its various backgrounds, ethnics, tribal groups, and so on.

"Its decision suggested: 'If Indonesia got independence, We (NU followers) want Indonesia to become a peaceful country (Darus Salam) rather than Islamic state.' Darus Salam means peaceful country, the one protecting all elements like Islam, Christianity, Bhuddism, Hinduism, Konghuchu, Java, Sunda, Batak, Dayak, Madura and so on," he said.

The NU decision, Kang said, added, had inspired the nation's founding fathers. In a meeting of the Investigating Council for Efforts of Indonesia’s Independence (BPUPKI) on 22 Juni 1945, it was stated that Indonesia constituted a Pancasila-based state.

"Our founding fathers like the nationalist Soekarno, Agus Salim from Sumatera, KH Wahid Hasyim who is the father of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) and others agreed that our state is based on Pancasila," Kang said said.

According to Kang Said the NU commitment is not opposed to the teachings of Islam because in the Pancasila itself there have been Islamic values and sacred teachings.

He was of view that the Pancasila could be regarded as such guide for all Indonesian citizens. That's why the existence of each religious adherent including Islam was legally recognized. Recognizing Pancasila would not ban the religiosity of each citizen. (rif)
