The Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has big potential to address emerging conflicts in Muslim countries, including social ones happening in every part of the world. The moderation teaching within the Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Aswaja) as adopted by NU could be such a stepping-stone to take measures.

Rector of Quranic Sciences Institute, Jakarta, Dr Ahsin Sakho Muhammad, MA, made the remarks on the sidelines of the third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) at the Jakarta's Borobudur Hotel on Wednesday (30/7).<<>br />
Ahsin said that the Aswaja teaching developed by the Nahdliyin-based organization was very effective and could be a means to deal with any conflicts in Muslim countries. Such principles as moderation, balance, and tolerance were basic foundations of the NU.

"The Aswaja teachings adopted by NU not only call for moderation in acting but they are also relevant with the development of era and the change of society. The teachings developed by NU are absolutely appropriate with the efforts of addressing conflicts happening within community," Ahsin, who earned his PhD from Madinah University, said.

According to Ahsin the cultural differences between Indonesia and other countries in conflicts should not be obstacles in the mediation effort and conflict resolution. As for him, the causes of the conflicts could be traced meticulously by examining and analyzing them.

"The cultural differences are not obstacles in handling conflict. The most important thing is that NU knows the roots of its problem. Next in conflict resolution, NU must be neutral," he said, adding that If NU could be neutral, it would be a good mediator in addressing the existing conflict.

He said, another big potential of the NU in addressing conflict in the Muslim countries was "a fact that NU is the biggest Muslim organization in Indonesia. As the biggest organization and the representation of the world's most populous Muslim country, NU has social capital and more responsibility." (hir)
