NU hopes no conflicts in the name of religion

General chairman of the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj said that NU hoped there would be no conflicts in the name of religion, calling on people including religious adherents to live life in harmony and respect each other.

Said Aqil made the statement as meeting with figures of the Inter-religious Communication Forum at the NU headquarters in Jakarta on Monday. The forum is comprised of Catholics. />
On the occasion, Said Aqil expressed his deep concern about inter-religious conflicts having still emerged in the country, saying it's understandable if such conflicts could anytime happen in other countries.

"In (all the conflicts) happen in other places, it's possibly understandable. But it's regrettable if the conflicts happen among Indonesia people who are widely considered respectful and polite," he said.

Meanwhile the forum led by Joko Kunjono expected Said Aqil to attend a gathering that will be held by Catholics in October ahead.

Chairman of NU KH Marsudi Suhud who was also present at the meeting said that NU along with related organizations would organize the Global Peace Festival by the middle of October ahead and invite world religious figures. (nam)
