The forum of International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) initiated by Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) may be considered as such a cross-interest bridge of Islamic world.

General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said here on Wednesday that the ICIS was a world forum which promotes a vision of moderate Islam and has nothing to do with conflicts in Muslim world recently<>.

According to Hasyim there has been no a world forum like the ICIS being able to gather Islamic scholars and ulema coming from various groups or sects within Islam. NU initiating the forum may be considered as a main actor.

"Because ICIS promotes peace vision of Islam genuine from Indonesia. It is not influenced and will be not influenced by any recent conflicts in Islamic world. That is why the ulema invited from various sects will be ready to attend," Hasyim told NU Online.

Hasyim also compared the ICIS with what called as the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) whose members are from Islamic countries or predominantly Muslim countries. In every meeting of the OIC, Hasyim said, those participating in it were not always Muslims that are really capable of understanding matters in Islamic world.

"If OIC, because of its members are countries rather than ulema, those attending are state officials like president, prime minister, minister, or deputy minister that are not always Muslims. If they are Muslims they perhaps have no good understanding about Islam," Hasyim said.

While the ICIS, Hasyim said, was such a world umbrella which has members from ulema and Islamic scholars that did understand any issues in their own countries.

"Those (ICIS members) have even involved themselves in any conflicts in Islamic world. So they did understand the root of the conflicts," Hasyim said.

So it's reasonable enough if NU's move through its ICIS, Hasyim added, could be considered as a "second foreign diplomatic channel." This diplomatic channel may help a formal diplomacy that can only be done by government, he sad.

"This ICIS can be a second track diplomacy," Hasyim said, adding that we could no longer count on our first track diplomacy." (rif)
