NU: Israel-Palestinian conflict based not on religious sentiment
NU Online · Kamis, 3 Juni 2010 | 09:07 WIB
The conflict between Israel and Palestine is not a conflict between Islam and Judaism, but between the aggressor of Israel and Palestinians.
The statement was made by by general chairman of NU (NU) KH Said Aqil Siradj after meeting with the President at the State Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday (2 / 6). "We do obviously regret any action committed by Israeli soldiers who attacked the Mavi Marmara," said Said.r />
According to Siradj, the settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must be conducted in a peaceful ways instead of justifying the action in the name of religion.
"So NU on behalf of the Indonesian nation will also coordinate with the government to make efforts in supporting the Palestinian nation to obtain its rights," Siradj said.
Siradj formerly said that whatever the reasons, the Israeli action could not be justified and had hurt the peace efforts by various parties in the world.
"PBNU (NU executive board) has from the beginning been against the use of violence for settling problems. This will certainly damage the peace efforts," he said.
Therefore, PBNU stated that the Israeli action this time must not be ignored.
He said PBNU supported the government`s efforts as the world`s largest Moslem populated country to take part in overcoming the tragedy.
Moreover the fate of 12 Indonesian citizens who participated in the mission was not yet known until now, he said.
"As a country with the world`s largest Moslem population we support the government`s efforts in participating in seeking peace in Gaza Strip," he said.
As an Islamic organization, he said NU had also taken efforts to make the Palestinians` dream of independence come true.
Mavi Marmara with 700 volunteers from various countries on board is one of six Freedom Flotilla carrying humanitarian supplies for Palestine.
The Israeli argued they opened fire because its troops had been swarmed by people on board. (min)
