General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi called on Nahdliyin (NU followers) to stay alert to other parties willing to question the 1926 NU Khittah (principle).

This phenomenon, Hasyim said, often emerged especially ahead of general elections either presidential elections or regional head elections (Pilkada). As if they reminded NU not to involve in politics. Whereas, he added, they would always take advantage of NU strength to their political interests.<>

"There are political parties but they have no followers. NU is not a political party but it has even big followers," Hasyim said, adding the parties would make use of the NU big followers to support them.

As speaking at a workshop on civic education held by the PBNU in collaboration with the Hans Seidel Stiftung at the Jakarta's Millenium Hotel on Thursday (19/3), Hasyim reiterated that the 1926 Khittah did not forbid NU from politics because it has a broader meaning, namely nationhood oriented-politics.

Hasyim said that NU was organizationally forbidden from involving itself in practical politics for the fact that "NU is not, again, a political party".

"So it is a big mistake if there were some viewing that NU could no longer involve in politics. The Khittah has indeed produced such a freedom of politics, namely  nationhood politics, not practical politics, not power-sharing politics," he said.

In the meantime Hasyim also said that the Nahdliyin were the same as other Indonesian citizens that have the same political rights. As for him, the citizens should first be given political and civic education. If not, they would be tired of facing each general election, he said. (rif)
