Responding to the new management NU consisting of various circles, including from Islamic scholars, academics, professionals and even politicians of different orientation, it is possible for NU to have no such clear directions. Those involving themselves in NU, admitted or not, have been from variety of elements and backgrounds.

In this regard, member of the Supreme Council of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Muchit  Muzadi said that NU should take into account of the statement made by Kiai Ahmad Siddiq that NU was not a taxi which can be hired and brought everywhere in accordance with the interest of the hirer, but NU was like a train having its own rail.

"Every board and member must follow the path of NU. NU should not be brought in accordance with the will of the board or its members for NU has its own track or Khittah (principles)," Muchid told NU Online here over the weekend.

In terms of the development of modernity fully littered with modern concepts and strategies, including techniques of managing organization, NU should constantly be managed and driven in the light of the Khittah and what so-called as fikrah nahdliyyah (lines of thought of NU)

"In regard with other cultures and traditions, they may be used as long as they can support instead of replacing. In turn, NU will not lose its identity and orientations," Muchit said.

To develop NU, in addition to undertaking renewal agenda continuously (akhdzu bil jadidil ashlah), it is also necessary to both maintain and preserve all long-standing  traditions (muhafadhah alal qadimis salih).

" The qaqdimis sholih relates to the doctrine of ahlussunnah wal jamaah (Aswaja) itself, the values of NU, fikrah nahdliyah and all its traditions," Muchit said, adding that to carry out all this, NU should not easily be trapped into conservatism and extremism. (nam)
