General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama KH Hasyim Muzadi said that the United Nations tended to pay more its attention to Israel rather than Palestine. The international organization could no longer do many things dealing with the Israel-Palestine crisis.

The UN, Hasyim said, could only stand firmly and fairly for each resolution issued related to Israel. He said that If the resolution was vulnerable for Israel, the UN would ignore the resolution. "On the contrary, this (resolution) will not be effective for Palestine," Hasyim told reporters here Friday (18/7).<>

Hasyim explained the unfair attitude shown by the UN would always be backed by the US and its allies. For in fact, he added, the Bush-led country was more pro Israel.

As a result, the ongoing dispute between Israel and Palestine would never meet its end. The goals to reach peace for the two countries had never been met so far, Hasyim added.

He was of view that there was other factor smoothing the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, namely the absence of unity in Palestine. So far, Hasyim said, Palestine had been divided in some camps capable of troubling its own struggle for independence.

In addition, Hasyim cited, Arab countries and the ones in the Middle East had no such similar viewpoints in terms of the fate of Palestine.

"There are some Arab countries supporting Palestine, they are active (in struggling for Palestine) and there are some in trouble," Hasyim said.

The president of the World Conference of Religions for Peace added, the Israel-Palestine conflict could be addressed if the UN littered with courage to take firm and fair measures over the resolutions it issued.

The most important thing being expectedly able to tackle the conflict, the Secretary General of the International Conference of Islamic Scholars said, was the unity of Arab and Muslim countries and Palestine alone. If not, there would be no peace in the region. (rif)
