The violent action committed by the Islamic Defenders Fronts (FPI) against the masses of the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Beliefs (AKKBB) at the National Monument Square in Jakarta over the weekend would likely meet public protests.

The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) urged police to arrest and crack down on FPI's actors committing the action.<>

Chairman of the PBNU KH Masdar Farid Mas'udi said here on Sunday (1/6) evening that the government should take a stand against any violent actions that could undermine its dignity.

If there was no such reaction from security officials, Masdar said, it meant the government had likely let the action occur.

"According to Masdar, any violence based on whatever reasons including religion was not permissible. Whatever religion, he said, had always encourage the importance of morality.

the FPI masses went after and beat the Alliance`s activists most of whom were women with sticks while shouting anti Ahmadiyah sect`s yells. A policeman was mandhanled by five FPI members.

Shortly later, security personnel arrived to the site to protect the participants of the National Alliance from the attacks of the FPI cadres. (rif)
