The Indonesia's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama urges the government, the National Police in particular, to conduct a thorough investigation into the manhandling of anti-corruption activist Tama Satrya Langkun, a spokesman said.
"The government must do so in order to calm the public and uphold justice," KH Masdar Farid Masudi, chairman of the advisory council of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), said here Friday.r />
He said state leaders should not only address the various problems happening in society with "rethorics" but take concrete and effective action to solve them.
Many issues such as cases of corruption, violence and sex scandals had so far not been resolved properly, he said when receiving a delegation of civil society organizations such as the Indonensia Corruption Watch (ICW), the Wahid Institute, the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute, Imparsial, Transparency International Indonesia at the PBNU head office in central Jakarta.
Citing an example, he said, the vigilante action by the Islam Defenders` Front (FPI) against a free healthcare familiarization meeting attended by three members of parliament in Banyuwangi recently had until now not been settled properly.
"There has as yet been no concrete action by the decision-makers. The rule of law is only a topic of empty rethorics. We produce so many laws but do not implement them," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
A leader, Masdar said, must not only abide by the law but also be able to transcend the law so that the essential purpose of the law, namely justice and order, can be achieved.
About Tempo magazine`s report on the implausibly big bank accounts of a number of police generals which was believed to have been the motive for the assault on ICW activist Langkun by unidentified persons, Masdar said the police`s statement they felt offended by the event was irrelevant. "If the report is true, it is the public, not the police, who should feel offended," he said.
Meanwhile, Bambang Widjojanto, chairman of ICW`s Ethics Council, said violence against activists should not be considered as ordinary criminal acts. From a constitutional viewpoint, such acts of violence affected the sense of security of all citizens.
He also said there was now a tendency to use violence to respond to criticism "and this is obviously very concerning." (dar)
