The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) would reportedly hold a discussion ahead of its third International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) that would be held in Jakarta on 30 July-1 August 2008 ahead.
The scholarly discussion taking up issues on position and orientation of Nahdliyin (NU followers) amid global Islamic movements would be held on Thursday (26/6) at 12.00 at the PBNU headquarters, Jl. Kramat Raya 164 Jakarta.<>
General Chairman of the PBNU KH Hasyim Muzadi, Muslim intellectual Prof. Dr. Amin Rais, chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) KH Ma'ruf Amin, Indonesia's Palestinian ambassador Fariz Mehdawi would be speakers at the discussion.
The much-awaited discussion would be broadcast through a live teleconference at [email protected].
The phenomena of Islamic movements in the country have likely been limited in domestic context and focused more on the classification between moderate, fundamentalist, extreme Islamic movements, and so forth. In this respect the discussion would try to unveil the Islamic movements emerging in Indonesia related to the global ones.
The discussion would in global perspective take up issues on the Jakarta Charter polemic (1945), debate over the nation's ideology (1955), chapter on religious issues in the 1945 Constitution amendment, terror and violent actions in the name of religion (2000s) till the demand to impose Syaria-based regional laws.
Organizing Committee chief HM Cholil Nafis recently said that the position and orientation of Islamic movements in the domestic context had limits. Whereas, he added, global interaction was now increasingly easy, open, and intensive.
"The existence of neo pan-Islamism movements like Hizbut Tahrir, Ahmadiyah sect, neo-Wahabism, Jamaah Islamiyah, and the liberalization of religious thinkings voiced by the Liberal Islamic Network for instance, also have global drivers," Nafis said.
While the July's ICIS would take a theme "Upholding Islam Rahmatan lil Alamin: Peace Building and Conflict Prevention in the Muslim World" as part of addressing any conflicts in Muslim countries. The ICIS would involve ulemas and scholars from countries around the world. (nam)
