The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU)  decided Thursday (22/1) that the 32nd Congress of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization would be held in Makassar on 25-31 January next year.

Formerly there were two alternative locations for the congress, namely Batam and Makassar. On account of considering plus and minus factors, Makassar is regarded as the most ideal place as such regions as Jakarta, Cipasung and Indramayu formerly offered themselves. Makassar is chosen because many big events have so far been centered in Java.<>

Makassar is chosen because the city can easily be reached. Makassar is the biggest city in eastern Indonesia. In addition, it can also easily be reached by participants from Papua, Maluku, Ternate
and its surrounding regions so that the participant do not have to provide a lot of money to get there. On the contrary, the participants especially from eastern Indonesian regions have to provide much money to reach Batam.

The organizing committee chief KH Hafidz Utsman explained that from survey carried out in terms of the two locations, the South Sulawesi regional administration fully supported the much-awaited event either in accommodation or in local transportation.

"They are also ready to build required additional facilities if the facilities are yet to prepare," he said.

In Makassar there is a hajj dormitory capable of accomodating some 2000 participants and many inns around the congress so that it would, of course, be accommodate approximately 3000. While Batam's hajj dormitory can only accommodate 1200 participants.

Based on a rough calculation, participants and observers from some 400 branches in which each of them will be represented by five participants, there would at least be a location being able to accommodate 2000 participants.

While the added value of Batam is its location which is not far from Singapore and Malaysia giving such possibility of Muslims from the two to participate in the congress. In addition, a conducive environment is also a consideration so that the congress can be held smoothly. (mkf)
