The leaders of political parties participating on the April 9 legislative elections launched in Jakarta on Monday their campaigns by making a joint pledge to carry out political rally peacefully.
Led by General Election Commission (KPU) Chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary, the party leaders made the pledge in a declaration which they read out aloud in unison at a ceremony in Hall D of the Kemayoran Jakarta Fair grounds, Antara news agency reported.<>
After reading out the declaration, they all signed the document.
The declaration contained a statement of all political parties to hold peaceful, orderly, and smart campaigns by obeying existing laws and regulations.
However, the ceremony was marred by a number supporters of a certain political party who forced their way onto the stage, prompting the event's organizers to call in security guards to remove the disturbers.
Police officers then asked the supporters to leave the stage and return to their seats.
The police guarded the stage for a while after the situation was brought under control.
The organizing committee had actually prepared sufficient seats for the supporters and sympathizers of political parties, but many of them left their seats and came forward to stand by the stage. (jp/dar)
