The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) expected the Jihad Resolution to be a spirit for Nahdliyin (NU followers) because the Jihad Resolution issued by the ulema (Islamic scholars) of NU on 20 October 1945 was a heroic national event which made international communities focus more on Indonesia.

General chairman of the PBNU KH Hasyim Muzadi made the remarks on the sidelines of a cornerstone ceremony, marking the beginning of the construction process of the new Jihad Resolution Monument at the East Java's NU Branch Board (PCNU) office, Jln. Bubutan Surabaya on Thursday (26/3).<>

Hasyim said the construction of the monument should expectedly be a means to explore its meaning instead of considering it as a mere good looking monument.

"It is a proof that the ulema of Nahdliyin were nationalistic religious figures. Since the beginning, the Jihad Resolution has not been issued to establish an Islamic state," Hasyim said, adding the call for the Jihad Resolution was aimed at defending the state because the religious laws are for common interest.

NU Online's Maulana reported the cornerstone ceremony was also attended the chairman of the advisory council (Syuriyah) of the East Java's NU Regional Board (PWNU) KH Miftachul Achyar, chairman of Syuriyah of PCNU KH Maghrobi Ghozadi, the leader of the Surabaya's An Nur Islamic boarding school (Pesantren) who is also one of the board members of PCNU KH Ghozali Said MA, and the chairman of PCNU KH Saiful Chalim.

Present also at the occasion were the Surabaya City Police Chief Senior Commissioner Ronie F Sompie, the chairman of the Surabaya's House of Representatives Musyafak Rouf and hundreds of Nahdliyin.

Meanwhile KH Miftachul Achyar expressed his great appreciation and supported the construction of the much-awaited monument, saying it could raise the spirit of loving to the nation.

Achyar expected the monument to be such reminder of the importance of having great leaders from the following generation.

KH Maghrobi Ghozadi was also the same opinion that the future generations should be able to taken into account of the dedication of the Jihad Revolution's initiators. At least, they could take such good historical values, full of patience and perseverance, he said. (dar)
