PBNU summons House’s NU figures to help Lapindo victims

The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) summoned here Tuesday a number of NU figures of the House of Representatives (DPR) to help handle the Sidoarjo’s Lapindo mudflow case.
Present at the occasion were Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin, Soelaiman Fadli, Mahfudloh Ali Ubaid, Mahsusoh Tosari Wijaya (United Development Party), Abdullah Azwar Anas, Khofifah Indar Parawansa (National Awakening Party), Ichwan Syam (Golkar Party), Muhammad Hasib Wahab (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle), and scores of NU prominent men.<>
General Chairman of the Indonesia’s biggest Muslim organization KH Hasyim Muzadi urged the DPR members to soon overcome the mudflow engulfing villages, roads, dozens of factories, swathes of paddy, sugarcane fields, as well as damaging railway, gas and electricity networks.
“I hope, each of us can work hard with our sincere hearts to help them (Lapindo victims),” Hasyim said, expecting there was no one pulling off political maneuver to pursue personal interests and cashing in on the disaster in business.
Hasyim added, the mudflow victims ”have been now in trauma” due to individuals’ interests to take advantage of the mudflow disaster. “In turn, they have no trust to anyone else including to the government.”
He said that PBNU would immediately talk to the government and any other nation’s institutions to seek a good solution of the mudflow disaster.
Lapindo, controlled by the family of business tycoon and politician Aburizal Bakrie, the welfare minister, was accused of not installing mandatory safety casings in the lower section of the drill hole, which would have prevented the mud from escaping. (rif)
