People in East Java go to polling booths determine their governor

People in different parts of East Java are casting their votes on Wednesday to determine the  next governor and deputy governor of East Java.

In the town of Madiun, for example, people at the Griya Kencana housing complex were already seen going in line since the voting booths were open at 7 a.m.<>

"I decided to go to this voting booth a bit early to avoid queuing. But in reality, other people were already out," Bambang, a resident at the housing complex, told Antara.

After casting his vote, Bambang said he would bring his family members out for a picnic as today is declared as a public holiday in his regency.

Many other regencies in East Java have also made this election day a public holiday.

Five pairs of candidates contest East Java's gubernatorial election. They are Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Mudjiono (supported by the United Development Party and 11 minority parties), Sutjipto and Ridwan Hisjam (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle), Soenarjo and Ali Maschan Moesa (Golkar Party), Achmady and Soehartono (National Awakening Party), and Soekarwo and Saefullah Yusuf (National Mandate Party and Democratic Party)

According to the latest survey by the Public Survey Institute, Soekarwo and Saefullah Yusuf remain the most popular candidates, followed by Khofifah-Mudjiono and Soenarjo-Ali Macschan. (jp/dar)
