The United Development Party is optimistic that it will largely be supported by Nahdliyin (NU followers) in today's legislative elections.

General chairman of PPP Suryadharma Ali told reporters after his meeting with general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi at the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta Wednesday (8/4).<>

Suryadharma expressed his optimism for considering two facts that the party was officially formed, among others, by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), saying there would directly or indirectly be such relationship between PPP and Nahdliyin.

In addition, he said, the PPP had been a party fully supported by the NU individual numbers before the reform era. "Before the reform era, Nahdliyin were understandably the main supporters of PPP," he said.

Suryadharma further explained that his party was relatively calm and not engaged in internal conflicts leading in turn to dispute.

"I do believe this is one of such considerations for Nahdliyin to cast their votes for PPP," he said.

During his meeting with Hasyim, Suryadharma who is also minister of Cooperative and Small-and Medium Enterprises was accompanied by vice secretary of PPP Muhammad Romahurmuziy.

He denied that his meeting with the number one man of the country's largest Muslim organization was aimed to seek political support from NU individual numbers.

"So, this (meeting) is actually not related to the political support," Suryadharma said. (rif)
