President offers condolences on Idham Chalid's demise

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Sunday offered condolences on the demise of former general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH. Idham Chalid.

"The President has expressed his deep condolences," presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said.<<>;br />
Julian said the President also praised Idham Chalid for his remarkable services during his life.

Idham Chalid was a national figure who contributed a lot to the political, religious and educational fields in the country, Julian quoted the President as saying.

By 12.00 local time, the President had yet to decide when he would pay last respects to the former MPR/DPR chief. But the President`s agenda could change any time, Julian said.

Idham Chalid who was also former second deputy prime minister in the President Soekarno administration died at the age of 88 at 08.00 a.m. on Sunday after he suffered ailment in the past 10 years.

His body is being laid in state at his residence in Cipete, South Jakarta. He will be buried at a cemetery in the compound of Darul Quran Islamic boarding school in Cisarua, West Java, on Monday.

Born in Setui, South Kalimantan, on August 27, 1922, Idham Chalid was survived by a wife, children and grandchildren.

Idham Chalid was general chairman of the PBNU from 1956 to 1984 and the chairman of MPR/DPR from 1972 to 1977. He was also known as the founder of the Islam-based United Development Party (PPP). (ant/dar)
