President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened on Saturday evening the 23rd national Koran recital competition in Bengkulu, which he said could contribute to the nation’s character building.
The President said the Holy Koran was a prime reference in the country’s efforts to develop individuals who could negotiate with challenges, problems and ordeals.<<>br />
“I want to remind all of us that the Koran recital competition this year coincides with our plan to build a dignified and excellent nation. A nation that masters science and technology, continues searching for new innovation and is eager to work hard will reach all its dreams,” Yudhoyono said in his speech.
He also called on Muslims in the country to promote Islam as a messenger of peace and justice to the world.
“By advancing the values of Islam, hopefully we can build tolerance, solidarity and togetherness among people of the universe,” the President was quoted by Antara as saying.
The competition features representatives of the country’s 33 provinces. The event will last until June 12. (dar)
