A book entitled "Breaking the Silence: Religion Hears Voices of Women as Victims of Violence for Justice" initiated by the National Commission on Women and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) was launched here on Wednesday.

The book is an attempt of the national commission along with religious organizations including NU to voice the importance of eliminating any violence against women.<<>br />
Neng Dara Afian, one of the commissionaries of the national commission explained the book was part of a collaboration between the national commission and religious organizations through constructive and continuous dialogues by involving women, victims of violence, community and religious figures for seeking the truth, justice and recovery.

The book written by Dr Nur Rofiah Bil Uzm raises several cases of violence such as polygamy, women as heads of family and female migrant workers (TKW) for pursuing a better life for themselves and their family.

"These three phenomena are enough to explain various violent acts against women in the midst of a patriarchal society and misunderstanding towards religious teachings for considerably marginalizing, discriminating and even ignoring the existence of women," she said.

Neng Dara said that the book offered new perspectives based on religious values in dealing with women as victims of violence, saying it's time to formulate such a fair treatment for women in regard with their nature and their role in guarding the sanctity of themselves, their family and even community, women and children, wives and heads of family including their position as citizens and public officials.

Neng Dara admitted there had been many laws and regulations which seek to protect women from any violence, but religion "has most of the time been used as a means of justifying" the violent acts.

"NU has an important role in changing the paradigm through schools, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and religious recommendations like problems deliberation (bahtsul masa'il)," she said. (mkf)
