Indonesia, which had voted in favor of the additional sanction imposed by the United Nations Security Council on Iran, also expressed support to the Iranian nuclear program for peaceful purposes.
Following the issuance of the UNSC resolution, Indonesia asked Iran to convince the world that the nuclear it has been developing was intended for peaceful purposes.<>
In the UNSC meeting at the UN headquarter in New York on Saturday (Sunday in Indonesia), Indonesian permanent representative to the NU Rezland Ishar Jenie reaffirmed that the settlement of the Iranian issue would change the rights of those involved in supporting non-proliferation agreement including Iran to build, produce and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes only.
The development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes remains an inaliebale rights of all the states to the treaty that should always be respected. Under this understanding, our delegation will vote in favor of the resolution," Rezlan said.
Rezlan further said that his side had to support the resolution as the delegation he was leading believed that the sanction should be imposed in stages and could be cancelled stopped if Iran followed the steps specified in the resolution.
The change as wished by Indonesia in the draft resolution had also been accommodated, he said, especially anything relating to mass destructive weapons-free region in the Middle East.
Rezlan also strongly denied that Indonesia’s stance to vote in favor of the resolution was the result of US pressure.
"In fact, Indonesia has to deal with the US in putting our concern in reference to the Mideast. On the other way around, it also shows that we did not agree with the resolution already made by the five permanent members of the UNSC," he noted as quoted by Antara news agency.
"We are trying to heed the situation. In fact, there are some matters which may inspire the raising of some questions on the draft resolution. It also shows that we have our principles that need to be maintained consistently," he said. (dar)
