Indonesia is to host an international Islamic conference of Sunni and Shi’ite ulema in Bogor, West Java, on April 3-4, an Indonesian official attending an Arab League summit meeting here said.
The unprecedented conference would be attended by ulema from 22 to 25 countries and was designed to find a solution to the various sectarian conflicts occurring in the Islamic world, Alwi Shihab, presidential special envoy for Middle Eastern affairs, said here Wednesday.<>
The Sunni and Shi’ite delegates would come among others from Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Malaysia, Pakistan, Egypt, Oman, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait. It would also be attended by the secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
Alwi said sectarian conflicts in the Islamic world now appeared to be intensifying as a consequence of political interference and were victimizing an increasing number of people.
"The many cases of violence occurring in Iraq and similar happenings in other parts of the world, for instance, are also increasingly disturbing the atmosphere of religous harmony because of their strong political overtones and the involvement of certain interests," he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Concerned about the situation, Indonesian ulema now wanted to facilitate a dialogue between the Sunni and Shi’ite sects to find a way out from their problems and thereby contribute to the creation of a harmonious life in the future, he said.
"They hope that through the conference the conflict and tensions between the two sects can at least be somehwat lessened," Alwi said, adding that the conference would provide a chance for the two sides to try at least to agree on an effective way to ease their conflict which was merely caused by sectarian differences.
Meanwhile, Iraqi foreign Minister Hosyar Zebari said the idea to organize an Islamic conference for the Sunni and Shi’it sects was the best way that could be pursued to achieve peace which in his country was being constantly disturbed by sectarian disunity with political overtones.
He expressed hope that the conference would be a positive contribution to the creation of peace in the Islamic world in general and in Iraq in particular. (dar)
