SBY supports Islamic propagation

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Sunday called for the propagation of Islam, saying it would help Indonesia reach its national development goals.

As reported by Antara new agency, in his speech at the 75th anniversary of the Assyafi'iyah Muslim organization, the President called on Indonesian Muslims to build an image of their religion which promotes peace and justice.<>

"Through propagation we can create a religious way of life and Islamic values which promote optimism and positive thinking," Yudhoyono told around 1,200 members of Assyafi'iyah from across Indonesia in a gathering at Bung Karno Sports Hall, Jakarta.

Constitutional Court chief Jimly Asshiddiqie, Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni, State Secretary Hatta Radjasa and Administrative Reform Minister Taufiq Effendy were also present at the event. (dar)
