The government will raise teachers and lecturers pay 14 to 15 percent, following an increase in the national education budget, a minister said Tuesday.

"With the raise, the lowest level civil servant teacher will receive at least Rp 2 million (US$216)," said Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo. He said the government allocated Rp 46.1 trillion for teacher salaries next year.<>

Bambang said that non-civil servant teacher would receive Rp 50,000 to Rp 100,000 in addition to their monthly salary. He said the distribution would be coordinated through the Education Ministry and the Religious Affairs Ministry utilizing their general allocation funds and special allocation funds.

The government has proposed an increase in the education budget to 20 percent of 2009 state expenditures, or about Rp 224.44 trillion, compared to Rp 154.2 trillion this year.

The minister also said that next year's education budget would be used mostly for the nine-year basic education government program.

"More than 50 percent of the budget will be used for that program," he said. (jp/dar)
