The beginning of Ramadhan will be settled today

The beginning of Ramadhan will be settled today (Sunday, 31 August 2008) or 29 Sya'ban 1429 (in Islamic calendar) at a meeting at the office of the Department of Religious Affairs, Jln. Lapangan Banteng, Jakarta.

The meeting aimed at determining the first day of Ramadhan (itsbat) will be chaired by the Minister of Religious Affairs Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni.<>

While the decision of the beginning of Ramadhan will made after Isya prayer following the result of rukyatul hilal (the sighting of crescent) from all appointed locations throughout Indonesia.

The itsbat meeting will be attended by some leaders of Islamic organizations, Indonesian Ulema Council, Hisab and Rukyat Board of the Department of Religious Affairs, astronomers,  representatives from Muslim countries and related authorities.

If there is one of appointed teams reporting that hilal (crescent) can be seen and be considered valid, the first day of Ramadhan will fall on Monday (1 September 2008) and all Muslims will expectedly start fasting in the same day.

The Committee of Astronomy of Nahdlatul Ulama (LFNU) has so far deployed some 50 teams to observe crescent in at least 50 locations across the country.

"We hope the crescent can be seen so Muslims in Indonesia can perform fasting in the same day," chairman of the LFNU KH Ghozalie Masroeri said as speaking at a talkshow taking up issues on the possibility of difference of Idul Fitri this year at Salman Mosque of the Technological Institute of Bandung (ITB) over the weekend.

While the Boscha Observatory has appointed six teams that will be deployed in six locations to monitor and observe the crescent that marks the beginning of Ramadhan. (nam)
