UN OKs to enhance cooperation with NU

The United Nations (UN) pledged to enhance cooperation with the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in various sectors to improve Indonesians' life quality.

The UN envoy to Indonesia el-Mustafa Benlamlih made the remarks as meeting with General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi at the PBNU's headquarters on Thursday (12/6).<>

"We would try to do positive things benefit people."

Mustafa said the cooperation with the NU was absolutely important for its large networks throughout the country.

As for him, the purposeful cooperation should directly be useful for people like increasing education and health. "We cannot do it alone."

According to Mustafa, one of development aspects that should be targeted is that the benefit can be reached by people. That's why the development must take into account of responsibility for human kind future.

The cooperation having so far been enhanced by the two parties is program on handling flood disaster in Jakarta and socialization of disaster risk management.

While KH Hasyim Muzadi explained that the NU had so far conducted any efforts aimed at improving the nation's education quality through its Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) that have reportedly amounted to 12 thousand across Indonesia.

In the pesantren, Hasyim said, all students were comprehensively taught and introduced with many disciplines like religion, moral (ethic), culture and so on. (mkf)
