West Java gov leads 'santri' to break Koran writing record

West Java Governor Ahmad Heriyawan led a mass Koran writing event on Saturday in which 3,119 students of Samit Al-Multazam Islamic boarding school in Maniskidul village, Jalaksana, Kuningan took part in the record-breaking contest.
“According to our records, this event has set a new national record with the largest number of participants of 3,119 santri [madrassa students] participating, dwarfing the previous record set in Tangerang, Banten, with 604 participants and in Jakarta with 1,208 participants,” Jusuf Ngadri from the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) said as quoted by Antara on Sunday.
Heriyawan, a member of the Islam-based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), lauded the event as among efforts to promote a “better civilization.”
“God willing, Indonesia will be able to become a leading country in the world civilization as it manages to integrate Imtaq [faith and piety] and science,” Heriyawan said.
Heriyawan said the mushaf, or Koranic verses, written by the students would be made into a complete Islamic codex. (dar)
