Men and women have same level on the side of Allah. He never differentiates His servants based on their sex or social strata. Only the most righteous of them will get the most noble on the side of Allah. But, there is one hadith from Imam Bukhari, Muslim, and Tirmidzi told that the majority of hell inmate is from women:

وَقمْتُ عَلَى بَابِ النَّارِ، فَإِذَا عَامَّةُ مَنْ دَخَلَهَا النِّسَاءُ

Meaning: “I (The Messenger of Allah) stood in front of hell door. Most of those who were in the hell is women,”

This shows us as if there is partition and differentiator between men and women. And that hadith as if explains that women are those who deserve to be blamed.

Literally, this hadith can be used as the legitimacy for men to scold and humble women. So, is that true that women is the mos occupant in the hell? What are the factors caused them to be the majority in the hell?

In his book, Al-Mubarakfury tried to explain that mean of the hadith is as advice for women to keep and preserve their religion so that be spared from the hell. It does not mean in quantity the inmate of hell is women.

It could be a proof of Muhammad’s concerning toward women and it does not mean to be marginalized them. So that, Rasulullah gave some tips to women in order to not fall into hell.

Those Rasulullah’s tips and advice also stated in another hadith which was narated by Bukhari. In Shahih Bukhari, Imam Bukhari made a special chapter about why women are said as the majority inmate in the hell. This chapter is titled by Kufran al-`Ashîr wa Kufrun Dûna Kufrin.

In that chapter, Imam Bukhori listed hadist which was narated by Abu Said al-Khudri who witnessed Rasulullah said to Sahabiyah (his woman comrade):

قَالَ: يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ تَصَدَّقْنَ فَإِنِّي أُرِيْتُكُنَّ أَكْثَرَ أّهْلِ النَّارِ فَقُلنَ: وَبِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: تُكْثِرْنَ اللِّعَنَ، وَتَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيْرَ

Meaning: “Rasulullah said: O women, give alms! Because verily I am shown that the majority of hell inmat is you (women).’ So, they asked: ‘Why O Rasulullah?’ Rasul answered: You often curse and do kufr to your husbands.”

In his book Fathul Bari, Ibnu Hajar al-Asqalani explained that kufr in this term is not kufr that make people out of Islam. But, kufr to the husband means to deny delectation which was given by husband and to leave the goodness which was done by them so it makes wives disobey.

It reminds us that wife obligation to obey their husbands is an inevitability as Rasulullah said:

لَوْ أَمَرْتُ أَحَدًا أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لِأَحَدٍ لَأَمَرْتُ المَرْأَةَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِزَوْجِهَا

Meaning: “If I (am allowed) command someone to kneel to other, so I will command a wife to kneel for her husband.”

In Faidul Bari, it is also explained that the hadith of hell inmate come up because ignorance women often curse and do kufr to their husbands. So, it is such an education which is strived by Rasulullah in order to women in Rasulullah era do not do the same deeds with Ignorance era.

It is very clear that the main point of this hadith is not to marginalized and degrade women. What Rasulullah want in that hadith is women in Rasulullah era do not imitate the moral of ignorance women such as to curse and do kufr to their husbands.

If women of today still do the same thing: to curse and deny delectation and righteous which are given by their husbands, so hell is an inevitability as Allah’s law. Wallahu A’lam. (M Alvin Nur Choironi/Muchlishon Rochmat)
