Hasyim Muzadi: Benedict XVI’s apology was already enough

Jakarta, NU Online
General Chairman of Indonesia’s largest Muslim orgaization (NU) Haysim Muzadi said Pope Benedict XVI’s apology over his derogatory remarks linking violence with Islam was already enough, calling on Muslims not to question it anymore.

"The Pope has apologized (to Muslims) and that’s enough so let’s calm down," Hasyim said after a function marking a cooperation with NU and the Judicial Commission here on Monday.

<>He said that the Pope had corrected his remarks and that was more than enough. If Muslims did not stop reacting to the Pope’s remarks, it could create the impression that Muslims were truly furious.

Benedict had come under mounting pressure from Muslim leaders worldwide to retract his remarks made in Germany Tuesday in which he quoted an obscure medieval text that criticised some teachings of the Prophet Mohammed as "evil and inhuman".

He stressed that the passages he quoted during a speech at Regensburg University "do not in any way express my personal thought".

"I hope that this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with great mutual respect," he added. (nam)
