Kiai Ma’ruf: Islam should be understood proportionally

Chairman of the country’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Ma’ruf Amin suggested here on Tuesday (19/9) the importance of understanding Islam proportionally that was capable of addressing various social changes.

“Islam is a religion calling for tolerance (tasamuh) by undertaking such efforts of dynamization in understanding texts and methods,” said Kiai Ma’ruf at a public dialog at the Wisma Antara, Jalan Merdeka Selatan, Jakarta.

<>Present also on the occasion, Indonesia’s Muslim intellectual Dr. Muslim Abdurrahman and Deputy Rector of the Paramadina University Yudi Latif that talked more Islam in Indonesian state.
Yudi Latif argued that pluralism was a must in the light of Islam as asserted by the Almighty within the Qur’an.

Diversity (pluralism) was not only a sunnatullah but also something absolutely intended by God,” said the Director Executive of the Reform Institute.

At the same time, Muslim Abdurrahman said that pluralism matters imply such efforts to place the diversity within an equal spectrum within the frame of moral and ethical base. (dar)
