Jakarta, NU Online
There is no need for NU to propagate the liberalism thoughts. NU is a religious organization (jam'iyah diniyyah) having its own approaches towards various issues such as social, religion, economy, politics and soon.

Ex-chairman of the Ansor Youth Movement H Slamet Effendi Yusuf told NU Online here on Monday (23/11), saying such approaches had been formulated in what so-called as Khittah of Nahdlatul Ulama.<>

According to Slamet, one of general chairman candidates of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama, in the Khittah, it was clearly mentioned that the social attitudes of the Nahdliyin-based organization are based on the teachings of Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah.

"That NU has always based its ways of thinking, behaving and acting on such attitudes as tawasuth, i'tidal, tasamuh and tawazun. Thus, the principle of liberalism is both theoretically and practically not in line with the NU Khittah," he said.

Slamet disagreed with some NU figures apparently paying no attention to the development of this line of thought within the NU milieu and considering the development is reasonable.

As the religious social organization having its own stand, Slamet added, NU should ideally strengthen its line of thoughts in addressing various recent actual problems.

"So why we should not evolve the idea having no relevance with NU as a religious organization.  Whereas the liberalism is a political and economic concept," he said.

Slamet called on NU intellectuals not to mix up religious discourses with any debate on various liberalism ones because the efforts to mix up the two very different discourses would give more burden to NU.

"If we want to develop religious thoughts, there should be based on started from (the teachings) of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah. Please never borrow ways of thinking from others like liberalism or other extreme line of thoughts like fundamentalism," the leader of the Purwokerto's Al Azhary Islamic boarding school (pesantren) said.

Commenting on the relationship between NU and politics, Slamet said that NU should not involve itself in any practical politics, but NU should give freedom tpo its followers to participate in the practical politics.

Nevertheless, NU should understand and take brilliant steps in dealing with politics because NU must care and speak about the state, government and society for all this has to do with our shared fundamental issues.

"If there are such issues as prosperity, justice, the unity and the fate of the nation and state, NU must take measures and voice. NU followers moreover its leaders should understand politics. (nam)
