Deputy Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), H As'ad Said Ali, was proud of the spirit of militancy demonstrated by members of Muslimat NU following religious gatherings held by the women organization. <>

"Therefore, I was always present if I received an invitation from the Muslimat NU," he said on the sidelines of a religious gathering at the Jakarta's Sunda Kelapa Mosque on Sunday (14/9).

He explained that the members of Muslimat NU had played an important role in educating their families and maintaining unity.

He said that the country's largest Muslim organization had already had many educated cadres, adding there had been some 1.3 million NU members who have bachelor degrees, whereas Kiai Wahid Hasyim in the 50s once said, "finding a NU scholar is more difficult than finding a seller of ice in the middle of the night".

"But whatever their discipline, religious education should not be omitted. It is the duty of mothers to educate (their children)," he said.

He explained that mothers, in this case the members of Muslimat NU, had the task of instilling the value of unity to their children as Indonesians who do realize their faith instead of being the ones who happen to be born in Indonesia, as both have very different meanings.
