The General Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) KH Yahya Cholil Staquf (Gus Yahya) called for the Indonesian Islamic Student Movement (PMII) to be able to respond to the needs and changing times.

According to Gus Yahya, PMII must make various breakthroughs towards the future. He said that NU currently needed a revival in three fields, namely intellectuality, technocracy, and entrepreneurship.

"We need a massive revival of dynamism among NU intellectuals. PMII is NU's intellectual resources. We do need them and it's quite complex because we have to dynamize a broad intellectual discourse," said Gus Yahya to the General Chairman of the PMII Executive Board (PB) Muhammad Abdullah Syukri (Gus Abe), on the 3rd floor of the Jakarta's PBNU Building, Monday (17/1/2022).

Gus Yahya mentioned that PMII had domains in formal campuses. Even so, he expected the Aswaja An-Nahdliyyah-based student movement organizations to be able to open a network in the so-called ma'had aly in Islamic boarding schools.

PMII was also asked to immediately revive technocracy. Because currently, according to Gus Yahya, it is still difficult to find technocrats in various fields who have strategic positions. In fact, he continued, the technocrats in the NU environment were very available, but there was no way to find them.

“We also need to organize NU organizations to awaken technocracy. Then the third is clearly entrepreneurship. So it dealts with the rise of Intellectualism, tenocratism, and entrepreneurship," explained Gus Yahya.

He emphasized that NU was a very large religious and social organization, both in terms of influence and followers. Therefore, NU must be able to awaken the three fields so that it could respond to the needs and changing times.

“If we don't have the right intellectualism, the right technocratism, and strong entrepreneurship, then the country will be damaged in the hands of NU. Now the choice is that, NU wants to be the culprit or wants to be a positive and constructive contributor," said Gus Yahya.

Responding to that, Abdullah Syukri said that all cadres in the branch management (PC) and branch coordinator management (PKC) had begun to be able to translate the rise of intellectualism into work programs.

"On account of cadre or movement, and propagation (da'wah). So we have also started moving in that direction. We at PMII also hold workshops or some of such cadre deliberation, formally, informally, and non-formally. It can answer today's needs,” explained Gus Abe.

Regarding the rise of technocrats conveyed by Gus Yahya, Gus Abe said that PMII had formed professional institutions in various fields. These various professions have been channeled into one forum so that in the future they could provide benefits on a network basis.

"In fact, many of our cadres are economists, entrepreneurs, and experts in the health sector," said Gus Abe.

Then the General Treasurer of PB PMII Panji Sukma Nugraha responded to Gus Yahya's message regarding the rise of entrepreneurship.

He emphasized that PMII was currently promoting economic independence. Because it is closely related to the running of the organization's wheels.

"So if we talk about independence, if we are not independent, we will be easily intervened. So indeed we will also continue to build collaborations with many stakeholders (policy makers) to talk about economic independence," said Panji.

At the meeting, Gus Yahya was accompanied by the Chairman of PBNU H Amin Said Husni. Meanwhile, Gus Abe was accompanied by the Secretary General of PB PMII Muhammad Rafsanjani and General Treasurer Panji Sukma Nugraha.
