NU 32nd congress in Makassar did not considerably reflect NU as a cultural movement, for there have been many political competitions among candidates and their supporters to pursue the NU leadership for the coming period.

A NU cultural caucus made the statement in a press release sent to NU Online here on Saturday. Some NU culturalists grouped under the caucus are Ngatawi Al Zastrouw, M. Jadul Maula, Aguk Irawan, A. Anzieb, Hasan Basri Marwah and Mell Shandy. />
"In the (NU) 32st congress in Solo five years ago, for instance, from a series of programs, such activities as meetings and situation in the congress arena did not reflect NU as a cultural movement," Zastrouw said.

As for him, the congress situation apparently reflected egoism and competition to pursue position. All this is allegedly due to political ambitions having so far increasingly emerged in the NU.

"While, culture for NU, reflects acts based on bright mind and soul, orienting to wisdom and avoiding any prejudice, building mutual understanding and shared interest," Zastrouw said.

The NU cultural caucus asserted that NU constituted as cultural movement basing its all movements on Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). Pesantren itself is place where various social elements may communicate with one another by building mutual understanding and shared interest.

"We hope NU chairmanship candidates, supporters and all Nahdliyin (NU followers) to return NU cultures to its true meaning," Zastrouw said. (nam)
