The tight East Java gubernatorial election having likely been used by certain parties to both break and divide the unity of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is strikingly clear. As if the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization is a commodity easily sold cheap.

General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi made the remarks as addressing a Halal Bihalal gathering held by the Bangkalan's NU Branch Board at Al Azhar Islamic boarding school (pesantren), Paseseh, Tanjung Bumi, Bangkalan on Thursday.<>

"One thing that did not happen in gubernatorial election in Central Java and West Java is now strikingly clear in East Java. (Some) kiai (clerics) are described to have crowded around one of pairs (of candidates) in such a way. Pesantren have been confronted with (other) pesantren. Once more, the picture of chairwoman of Muslimat NU has been posted with drawing cross," Hasyim said.

The leader of Malang's Al Hikam Islamic boarding school was of view that NU in the province could be considered a barometer for NU in other regions. For that reason, in the second race held on coming 4 November, he called on Nahdliyin (NU followers) to determine their best hopeful.

"Yes, there have been two dueling cadres, but NU is now in need of governor and we should take a lesson from Jakarta in which its NU chairman became governor in the province having no clear number of Nahdliyin," Hasyim said, as reported by NU Online's Supandi.

Hasyim said that his call was aimed at struggling for the interest of NU in general. "It is not possible that we are constantly in stupidity leading in turn to be supporters. What is simple to say is how to make NU as a motorcycle rather tan its helmet," he said. (rif)
